Weekly Reel: The SPSL and its 7 days

Posted: December 8, 2010 in Weekly Updates

Don't let the mid-week peace fool you. Tensions flew as the SPSL kicked into high gear this past weekend. There were no love affairs, that's for sure.

Happy: Pirate SC emerged on the better side of the bitter battle with Regals FC in Galveston on Saturday.  The team shut out its archenemy 2-0 behind two first-half goals.

Poisoned Apple:  Regals FC’s luck ran out when its 13-game win streak (including non-league competition) was snapped against Galveston.  The league’s most prolific offense departed the coastal city with a sour taste in its mouth and a hunger for revenge.

Dopey:  It wasn’t pretty, but Club America was able to stumble past Lonestrikers with a strong second-half performance to appear as 3-2 victors and bring itself into a tie for fourth place with its aforementioned opponent.

Doc:  Roy Hernandez and Edwin Serrera stepped up as leaders to single-handedly assume responsibility for their teams’ scoring.  Hernandez netted both of Pirate SC’s goals and Serrera picked up a hat trick to secure Club America Academy’s first victory.

Grumpy:  There were five red cards flashed at outraged players this weekend.  A fairly even spread:  Two to Pirate SC players and one to each Regals FC, Club America, and Texas Lonestrikers.  All five occurred in the second half of their respective matches.

Bashful:  Corpus Christi Fuel has shied away from the winners’ column so far this year.  The team will look to change that when it travels to take on Club America Academy this Saturday at 3 p.m.

Mirror, Mirror:  What does the future hold for the league’s two remaining undefeated teams?  Chances are that at least one of them will pick up a blemish on their now spotless record when Tulsa Lobos FC opens at home with a double-header against Galveston.  Saturday’s match kicks-off at 3 p.m. and Sunday’s showdown will commence at noon.
